The Best Trail Running Locations in the UK

Running in a gym or even a city can be pretty boring and monotonous, not to mention the lack of variation in the terrain. If you really want to get out and see the world then we would recommend trail running.

Taking you across some of the best locations in the UK, trail runners get to experience a multitude of terrains and gradients on their runs as well as being in the great outdoors. There’s no jogging on the spot waiting for traffic lights to change or having to make sure you aren’t hogging a machine at a gym.

We thought we would look at some of the best trails in the UK that you might want to explore and run if you happen to be in the area.

The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are the UK’s most impressive mountain range as well as being the UK’s biggest National Park. You know with that kind of clout you are going to get some absolutely breathtaking runs both physically and in regards to the views. You can run a number of trails along the Cairngorms such as Loch Muick, Rothiemurchus and Lairig Ghru.

The Brecon Beacons

If you find yourself in South Wales then taking on the trails here is a must. If you want a challenge you won’t be disappointed as the SAS train here. Try the trails at Pen y Fan or Fan y Big if you decide to go here.

The Lake District

If you are in England then visiting Cumbria to take on some of the runs at the Lake District is definitely recommended. 20 lakes and 200 fells offer a number of great trails that you might want to challenge yourself with.


If it is the wilderness you are looking for then the 368 miles of wild moorland in Dartmoor, Devon could be ideal for you. This is a great location for experienced trail runners because it can be boggy and misty but the rewards are obvious with stunning locations.

Isle of Wight

If you find yourself on the Isle of Wight you might want to take on the coastal path that circles the island. Cliffs, beaches and bays all await you as you travel through a great many different terrains.

If you are thinking about trying to get out more for a jog or run you might want to take in the odd trail run. Before you know it you will be hooked, not only do you get to see some of the most appealing aspects that this country has to offer but you will also improve your fitness considerably.

To enjoy trail running it is pretty important that you don’t mind a bit of mud or being subjected to the elements. Pre planning and looking at conditions before hand will let you prepare for any change in conditions though so it shouldn’t be an issue.
